Cross Layer Optimization for Data Gathering in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks within Expected Network Lifetime

چکیده
The use of multimedia sensor nodes can significantly enhance the capability of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for event description. In a number of scenarios, e.g., an erupting volcano, the WSNs are not deployed to work for an extremely long time. Instead, the WSNs aim to deliver continuous and reliable multimedia data as much as possible within an expected lifetime. In this paper, we focus on the efficient gathering of multimedia data in WSNs within an expected lifetime. An adaptive scheme to dynamically adjust the transmission Radius and data generation Rate Adjustment (RRA) is proposed based on a cross layer design by considering the interaction among physical, network and transport layers. We first minimize the end-to-end transmission delay in WSNs while using the minimum data generation rate. In this phase, an optimal transmission radius can be derived. Then, using this transmission radius, we adaptively adjust the data generation rate to increase the amount of gathered data. Simulation results show that the proposed RRA strategy can effectively enhance the data gathering performance in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) by dynamically adjusting the transmission radius of sensor nodes and the data generation rate of source nodes.

Transmitting and Gathering Streaming Data in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks Within Expected Network Lifetime
Using multimedia sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can significantly enhance the capability of WSNs for event description. Different kinds of holes can easily appear in WSNs. How to efficiently transmit multimedia streaming data and bypass all kinds of holes is a challenging issue. Moreover, some applications do not need WSNs to work for a long lifetime, e.g. monitoring an eruptin...

Due to the resource constraint and dynamic parameters, reducing energy consumption became the most important issues of wireless sensor networks topology design. All proposed hierarchy methods cluster a WSN in different cluster layers in one step of evolutionary algorithm usage with complicated parameters which may lead to reducing efficiency and performance. In fact, in WSNs topology, increasin...

This paper proposes an efficient network architecture to improve energy consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The proposed architecture uses a mobile data collector to a partitioned network. The mobile data collector moves to center of each logical partition after each decision period. The mobile data collector must declare its new location by packet broadcasting to all sensor node...
متن کاملEnergy-Saving in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Optimization Sink Movement Control
A sensor network is made up of a large number of sensors with limited energy. Sensors collect environmental data then send them to the sink. Energy efficiency and thereby increasing the lifetime of sensor networks is important. Direct transfer of the data from each node to the central station will increase energy consumption. Previous research has shown that the organization of nodes in cluster...
